Laser lipolysis is a type of [cosmetic surgery](https://www.pennmedicine.org/cosmetic-services/cosmetic-surgery-faqs).
It uses laser energy to change the shape and appearance of the body. Other methods
of lipolysis, such as injections or radio wave therapies, are available, but laser
lipolysis is the most commonly used.

It’s usually meant for patients who want to reduce a localized fat bulge of the
abdomen and flanks. The laser liposuction technique uses lasers to break up fat
before its removal from the body, reducing the need for harsh suction. It has become
a commonly adopted and accepted modality for removal of unwanted fatty tissue and
is claimed to be as effective as traditional liposuction without a hospital stay.

With laser lipolysis, thermal elevation of a given volume can be obtained provided
that the penetration depth remains in this nominal range. The Medical Diode Laser
Systems[ SIFLASER-3.3](https://sifsof.com/product/medical-diode-laser-systems-siflaser-3-3/)
has a wide range of wavelengths that varies between 810nm and 1470nm with CW, single
pulse and pulsed mode, so that the surgeon could choose a laser depending on the
application and his needs.

Short wavelengths have more superficial penetration, while longer wavelengths have
deeper penetration in the tissue.

Laser lipolysis is quickly gaining popularity as a fat-reduction method. It’s been
proven that fat liquefaction is produced by increasing the temperature of [adipocyte](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adipocyte#:~:text=Adipocytes%2C%20also%20known%20as%20lipocytes,rise%20to%20adipocytes%20through%20adipogenesis.)
cells, and fat volume decrease is dependent on the total cumulative energy provided
at the treatment location.
