Ultrasound-guided Kidney biopsy or Percutaneous renal biopsy (PRB) is a technique
that includes taking a small piece of kidney tissue for examination with a microscope.

### **Which ultrasound scanner is used for kidney biopsy?**

With a [convex](https://sifsof.com/?s=cONVEX&post_type=product&type_aws=true) ultrasound
of 3.5 MHz transducer [SIFULTRAS-5.21](https://sifsof.com/product/wireless-color-portable-ultrasound-convex-3-5-5mhz-sifultras-5-21/),
doctor localizes the bottom pole of the native kidney or the upper pole in case
of the renal allograft and evaluates the distance to the biopsy point from the skin
surface.

Then the doctor should put a sign on the skin surface where the needle will enter.
The skin, [subcutaneous](https://www.healthline.com/health/subcutaneous-injection),
and peri-renal tissues penetrates with local anesthetic using ultrasonic guidance,
verifying sufficient local anesthesia along the intended biopsy pathway.

To make a smooth passage of the biopsy needle, the doctor should make a small cut
through the weal. The biopsy needle is then guided through the skin incision, and
then under real-time ultrasonic guidance across the bottom pole of the kidney or
the upper pole of the renal allograft.

The progress of the needle is then stopped when the tip of the needle is seen to
infiltrate the renal capsule. The gun is then fired, then instantly advancing the
cannula over the stylet and getting a core of renal parenchyma.

After the procedure, the kidney can be scanned to evaluate for the existence of
hematoma or active bleeding. A second check with ultrasonogram should be done after
24 hours from the procedure to watch for any peri-renal bleed or hematoma which
would have developed later.

This procedure is recommended by [nephrologists](https://sifsof.com/product-category/doctor-specialties/nephrologist/),
